Old-school shaving love
I've been trying to clean up the products we use around the house, choosing more eco and skin friendly options. I've been trying to cut out products made with chemicals and SLS etc and am buying more eco-friendly or handmade products. Among many other changes, Ben now has a new shaving routine. He picked out a beautiful handmade shaving brush from a market last year. It's made with pure badger hair in Bubinga wood and it's from The Copper Hat. Then I found him this awesome vintage Old Spice glass shaving mug in Amsterdam at an open air market, so that's where he keeps his shaving soap bar from Snappy Rockfish Soap, made by our good friend Brittany in Portland! He enjoys a closer shave (and hey, so do I!) and we have done away with shaving cream canisters. It's a pretty good deal! Brittany often posts on her blog about natural home remedies for your beauty routine and household cleaning. I've been really inspired by her attempts to minimize the amount of products she uses and to use natural remedies, some of them are pretty surprising! Switching over and getting into the habit of trying more natural or homeopathic solutions is a slow process for me but I feel good about it.
Do you have any natural or DIY secrets?

Cute for a cause
ADORABLE! Little white and grey poodles are probably my favourite kind of poodle. They are so darn cute and I am a sucker, even for the one that barks every time it comes into the store I work in. So I want this one, and the super sweet hand-woven cowl she's wearing! What's even better is that 20% of the sale price of all items from this shop go to the Riverside City Animal Shelter in California. Check out this cowl and more in the Charlie Hearts Diesel shop here.

Shop Update
Just wanted to let you know I've been listing a bunch of items from this winter that I didn't have the chance to get online before. These two pairs of earrings are some of my favourites! There's more to come too, keep an eye out. Shop here, as always.

Lost Treasures
| a couple of yesterday's finds |
I'm considering opening a vintage shop on Etsy. I think it will be little things for the most part. Little china dishes, jewelry, photos...
I'm thinking about the name Tender Buttons Vintage. I'm in love with the name Haven but it's taken (and as a vintage shop) so that's out. I love the phrase tender buttons - it's the title of a seriously different book (collection of poems? hard to describe!) by Gertrude Stein. I also think it would fit nicely as a name for a vintage shop. Thoughts/opinions on the name? I was also thinking of the name Bright Star Vintage, or Wild Eyes Vintage. I'd love to hear your input and any other ideas you may have!

Inspiration
I haven't made much jewelry lately. Really, I've hardly made any jewelry at all in the past few months and when I have I haven't felt very inspired. I'm come to the realization that I've started making things with selling in mind and let that reason sort of take over from making things because I like them, because I've been inspired. The last number of items I made were because I was trying to get stock together for consignment, following a store owner's suggestions. And while her input is really valuable, I sort of felt like I was losing control over my pieces - like I wasn't following my heart anymore. I also started limiting my creations in terms of money - I resisted making things that would cost more for fear that they wouldn't sell, or wouldn't sell for a while. These are all good things to keep in mind (outside input, cost...) but they sort of dampened my spirit. I was down near one of my favourite supply stores the other day on an errand and even though I didn't really have the money to spend on supplies, and I didn't really need any supplies, I let myself go in. I ended up buying a number of things, including the three items pictured above. Things that made me go "oooooh, beautiful!" , that I was already dreaming about making into gorgeous, magical necklaces. And I realized I really missed that, and hadn't made things for those reasons in a really long time. So my advice to other makers is to make sure you make some things for the pleasure of it: the things you dream about or that make you dream. That geode slice definitly cost more that I'd usually spend on a pendant, but I finally caved because dammit, I LOVE geodes, I think they're unbelievably magical and beautiful and I always drool over jewelry made with them, so why shouldn't *I* make something with them? I'll really enjoy it, and even if they sit around for awhile before they sell, it's totally worth it. Yes, I'll still make some earrings and silk cord necklaces and other nifty things, but I've realized that those special silver charm necklaces are my ~thing~, and I need to make sure I let myself have fun making them more often. You've gotta be able to keep your passion going - otherwise what are you doing it for? I'm pretty sure none of us are doing it for "the money." (At the going consignment rate? HA!) Really, I think when you make things that you're really inspired to make, rather than "I ought to make this" or "this might sell well," it shows, and makes your work so much more special.
If you want more Etsy tips, Sarah did a great post recently with her top pointers.

Etsy ♥'s
If I had a million dollars... I'd buy SO MANY THINGS from Etsy. Here are a few items I've added to my favourites lately.
I think this is how I feel/look lately. Oh kitty. Art print from corelladesign on Etsy.
My joints seem to be worse when I get cold. People keep telling me my hands are cold lately, and they've been very stiff and sore, and I've been half thinking about wearing fingerless gloves to see if it helps. Wouldn't THAT be a rockin summer look. These are from the filofashion shop on Etsy.
This photo is so stunningly gorgeous and was part of the inspiration behind my latest tattoo dreaming. It's from the BackyardPhoto shop on Etsy.

New Items
These are a few of my favourite things. I love the brushed silver rings in these earrings and have a bit of an obsession with gold-tinted Swarovski crystals like these fabulous ones.

This is my favourite of this style of bracelet that I've made so far. It's like strawberries & cream ice cream and ice. It's feminine without being too girly or in your face.

Tiny Confessions
I have a new favourite Etsy shop! Someone in my Etsy circle added an item from this shop to their favourites and I love EVERYTHING there!

How is this not awesome? The shop is called "Tiny Confessions" and that is what it is full of. You should definitely check it out.
I am away in Osoyoos right now but should be back Monday or Tuesday evening. But as you can see, I've scheduled posts, so you might not even notice I'm gone!
xo.

Update - a sale and broken hands

So, I haven't updated you on my hands! Sorry. I had a few posts scheduled and I took the weekend off from the computer. Mostly because using them makes my hands want to die! Pretty lame. The x-ray and blood test (oh yay, love those!) results came back with nothing, so it's probably just nasty tendonitis! Friday I had been busy editing photos and listing items and other things online and by the evening the saddle joints (thumbs) were BURNING. So I iced my hands for the rest of the night, and have been off and on since then. I am now because just fixing a few photos and listing a few items is bothering them. It's really frustrating. Other than taking advil and icing my hands all I can do is try not to use my hands too much to do things like text, use my laptop and other fine handwork, like make jewelry. So, you know, just refrain from doing the things which generally take up most of my time. I didn't know what to do with myself all weekend! Haha. I did make some jewelry, trying not to do anything that aggravated my hands. If I get photos taken there should be a gorgeous sparkly new bracelet in the shop soon.
Ok, onto better topics! Like a sale! Who doesn't love a sale? Many of the items in my shop have been discounted. The details are in each individual listing, and sale items are marked with "SUMMER SALE" in the title. Pretty simple! Go wild!

Dreaming of home
Ben have been talking about moving lately. We're hoping to buy a townhouse - so exciting!! We also won the lottery, of sorts, recently. He's doing a side-job this summer (he's an electrician) and the guy he's doing it for is going to give us their old bedroom set for free! It's gorgeous wooden antique furniture: it sort of reminds me of my grandma's furniture, but I like this better. Here's the bed and a bit of a bedside table:

When I saw the set of pillowcases shown below by Bark Decor my first thought was how awesome they would look on our future new bed. They're so great! So then I made this treasury inspired by the furniture and our future new home :) I hope you like it! Check it out here for bigger photos and to see the item listings.

I've also got a home inspiration board on Pinterest which you can check out here!

Summer Wishlist (part 1 of 1000)
I am adding things to my wishlist daily, which is rather frustrating as I haven't worked in weeks. LAME. Anyhow, I can't handle all the beautiful things, so I though I would share some of them with you guys to relieve the pressure somehow. If you want to send me something for a belated birthday gift you are more than welcome to ;)

I am dying over this bracelet by Gale of Wichser Studio, which is way under-priced in my opinion. Please don't buy it unless you are planning on sending it to me. It's in her Etsy shop here.

I want SO MANY of Clare's pieces!! So very many. I especially love the ones of the couple in bed and these fabulous new ones of girls in water. They are incredibly beautiful and remind me of Osoyoos, which is like my summer home. You can find this print in her Etsy shop, Tastes Orangey.

I think everyone knows and loves Danielle's work by now. This is one of my favourites and I definitely want one hanging on my wall soon. You can find this in her Etsy shop, The Merriweather Council.

I'd love to have a pair of Tumbleweeds sunglasses. My current favourites are the lighter coloured pair in this photo. So gorgeous! Beca and Doug have been working really hard making these beauties and they are as durable as they are good-looking. I've seen video proof. You can find these in their shop.

This party bear tank is kind of outrageous. Love it! I bought Ben the bike-riding bear shirt a little while ago (be sure to check it out, and please note that isn't a salmon in his mouth as everyone thinks at first). You can find the party tank in the Bark Etsy shop.
This is only a tiny taste of my current lusts but I don't want to overload you with awesome. Maybe I will share more later, if you're lucky.
